About Madras University

Madras University is a state public university which was established in 1857. It is one of the oldest universities in India and is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university has been ranked 65th in the overall category and 50th in the university category in the NIRF Ranking 2023. UGC has recognised the university as one of the centres for "potential for excellence". It has also been accredited by NAAC with an “A++” grade.

There are a total of 12 courses in various specialisations available to interested candidates at the diploma, certificate, PG diploma and postgraduate levels. The admission to the offered courses is provided on the basis of merit in the last qualifying exam, except for MBA & MCA. To become eligible for MBA & MCA, interested candidates have to appear and qualify in TANCET. As per the Madras University placement data for 2022, a total of 440 PG (2-year) and 5 PG (3-year) candidates received placement opportunities with reputed recruiters.

Madras University campus is spread over an area of 142 acres in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The university students have access to numerous facilities. The infrastructural facilities at Madras University consist of various facilities such as hostels for both girls and boys, libraries, sports facilities, medical centres, transportation, banking and many more.

Cafeteria: The cafeteria of the university caters to the needs of the students as well as staff. It has a variety of cuisines that are prepared fresh regularly. The canteen staff is trained in the food safety measures.
Library: There are a total of four libraries situated on the Chepauk, Guindy, Marina, and Taramani campuses. They have more than 2 Lakh books as well as more than 15,000 journals. The facilities at the university include resources for visually impaired students, a book bank, research services which are available online and many more.
Labs: Laboratories are very important for the practical understanding of the students. The university has dedicated laboratories for the benefit of the students such as the Anatomy Lab, Pathology Lab, Chemistry Lab and more.

Madras University hostel fee structure differs depending on the facilities chosen by the candidates. There is a women's hostel at Chepauk, one men’s hostel at the Marina campus, Men’s & Women’s campus at the Guindy campus along with 2 hostels for men & 1 women’s hostel at the Taramani campus.
